My guilty pleasure--tainted.

I LOVE Jon and Kate Plus 8. I just think it's fun and easy and I really enjoy the real-life, totally uninteresting drama that takes place--especially now as a mom. I think we can all see a little bit of ourselves in Jon and Kate and that is really comforting. But, I started seeing less and less of myself in them. Vow renewals in Hawaii for a family of 10? Um, no, I won't be doing that anytime soon. Then, the new house, the mansion on hundreds of acres. Again, not quite as easy to relate to. But, I thought, good for them. If I had the resources I wouldn't be living in 1500sq ft of mostly-remodeled house in the most depressing and culture free city (unless you call Red Robin and Azteca culture) in the state, except for maybe Kent (I guess we're just the Kent of the north). Anyway, I digress, I was watching the show tonight and they played a preview for next week where they glimpsed the couple talking about how they're marriage was in "trouble." I'd also been hearing rumors of this, so I decided to get online. I discovered 2 things. 1. People are ridiculous. They're posting pictures of Jon posing with 2 women and using it for proof that he cheated. 2. Jon and Kate are HATED. I mean hated. I decided to see what all the fuss was about and came across this article: http://www.phillymag.com/articles/jon_and_kate_gosselin/page1
Okay. Probably most of you won't read that article--it's 6 pages long, but it's thought provoking (I can't believe I just said that about something so ridiculous). I know that it's so easy to target people in the spotlight and judge them really unfairly and without considering their feelings or their reality, but this article struck a chord. Maybe it's not all so fun and sweet and charming. Which sucks, because now watching this show is not a better, less ridiculous option than the Real Housewives of New York. They're now equally ridiculous and equally fake. Although, at least RHNY doesn't claim to be something it's not, except none of them are actually housewives. Whatever. I can't believe how feeble this is making me sound. Listen, I work really hard in school and at being a mom, sometimes you just need an escape. My escape is watching a woman who has a lot less time and a lot more children than me--it just makes me feel a little better about my situation.

Why am I fascinated by this garbajsh (that's French BTW)????

Now you have ruined it for me! I did read the whole 6 pages because I love that show too. She does seem like a bitch so I could see a lot of that being true. Although, I would be a bitch too if I had 8 kids.

Funny you should bring this up. Last night, Lacey insisted that she watch the JK8 episode because she had heard about the rumors and seen the previews as well. We used to watch the show regulary, but have not watched lately for whatever reason. Last night when the show came on, and I heard about the gigantic house and ski trip to UT, I lost it. I had always suspected that their situation was, well "suspect". The latest updates only confirmed my suspicion.

Lacey will be the first to tell you that I have a hard time watching Kate. Not just because of her ridiculous hairdo (although that may be grounds enough for some), but because of her constant nagging and references to herself. I feel like she's a phony, which I do not have any specific instances to back up. It's just a gut feeling.

I realize that many women respect and admire Kate for her strength and how she deals with what must be a "complicated" lifestyle. But I am of the opinion that any couple with correctly wired brains would be able to adjust to eight children. People just figure out a way to make it work.

When the show started, I felt like JK8 had something to offer. Viewers got a glimpse of what it's like to raise 8 children and empathize with a couple struggling to make it work. Now the show seems unnecessary, especially with all of the other families on, some with twice as many kids. I find myself asking, "why is this family still on TV?" To me, the show is no longer genuine. It has transitioned from a story about a family to a reality show. I just hope the children don't get burned in all this.

BTW, Everett is surely not the most depressing and culture free city in the state. Just drive south on I5. You'll find very little culture between Seattle and Portland. But compared to Paris, yeah, E-town is a S-hole.

Josh, you are hysterical. I can't wait until I can see you in person and discuss this at length. And yeah, Kate's hair? It's a little much. Don't they have stylists by now? Hers should be fired!

Another reason I'm glad I don't have cable. However, the few times I've had cable access, I did catch a few minutes of J&K folding laundry and her being a total b*tch to him. It made me uncomfortable so I can't imagine how an entire episode would affect me. I agree with Georgia in that the only way to watch that show is through the Soup!

Okay, I don't watch JK8, but wasted several minutes finishing that article. Those poor children- I just hope they turn out normal.

The show that really scares me is that one religious family with the 18 kids. And all their names start with J. That's just messed up (the 18 kids, not the J thing). In this day and age, it's just ridiculous. Yes, they are able to support them, but does that really make it okay? Not to mention the however many thousands of children who need a good home.
And did any of you ever hear about the Snowflake Project? The one where people adopt other people's leftover embryos? All I can think is, damn, the self esteem of those poor kids in foster care must just have bottomed out. The competition for a good home just increased by a couple million.
